I first interviewed two-time Tony Award Nominee Gavin Creel (Thoroughly Modern Millie and Hair) in 2009 just as Call Me Adam was starting out and again this past December when Gavin released his single "NOISE" with accompanying video.

Now, Gavin is about to release his new album, Get Out, on March 20, 2012. To celebrate, Gavin will be having a CD release concert at Joe's Pub on March 19, 2012 (which is already SOLD-OUT)!

In this NEW interview, Gavin once again answered my call, but this time around he shares:

1. What excites you about the release of "Get Out"? I love this record. It gets me really excited. The grooves, the instrumentation, the lyrics and stories all work together in a way that makes it nearly impossible for me not to dance around my bedroom (and the streets of New York City).

2. How did you come up with the title and concept for this album? Ben Cullum (my producer and cowriter for this record...oh, and he played all the instruments too...yeah..he's wicked) and I just started making songs together. It was really fun and really easy and involved a lot of full english breakfasts, visits to the regent pub for beer and popcorn and...Cadbury's chocolate treats. We just chilled, talked about sounds and beats we liked, I told him I wanted to make "epic pop" and not apologize anymore for my theatrical flair. I wanted to tell honest stories in 3 minute pop songs and implore the listener to engage in whatever way they could.

Get Out just seemed a bit rougher and more overt for some reason. I hadn't named a record yet after a track...I thought about coming up with another concept title, but Get Out just seemed perfect. I want everyone to get in to get out.

3. How does Get Out differ from your previous albums? The most obvious way is I have a new collaborator in Ben. I made my first two records and my recent single, "NOISE" with my brilliant friend Robbie Roth. Also, the first two records are (duh) from a younger me. Each time I get up in the studio with new songs, I'm further down the path to understanding (or not at all!) who I am, and this record feels like a raw-er, maybe even more courageous version of myself.

I turned 35 while we were building a lot of these tracks and, I don't know...I think something switched over in me...I'm wandering around in a less frantic and not-worried-as-much/at-all-about-what-the-world-thinks sort of place. Making music has become more joyful for me, as I get older. Get Out captures that.

4. How do you feel you have grown as an artist with the release of Get Out? (see above)

5. What's your favorite part of the creative process in putting an album together? The panic while writing that sets in that, "oh hell...this might be the last song I ever write..." and then 20 minutes later after a walk and a cup of tea, finding that stanza or melody line that snaps it all into place. I love that.

6. What are you looking forward to about your March 19 CD release concert at Joe's Pub? The thing I'm most excited about is the band and singers that will be up there with me. We are going to kill it and introduce all these songs to the world.

7. What do you like about performing there? Joe's Pub feels like home. When we were thinking about where to have a cd release party (something I have actually never done) we were thinking about getting a big venue or blowing it out crazy or something, and then...I thought...F that. I'm going back to where I know and love, to a place that has been so good to me. The audiences there, the staff, the Public, Oskar, everyone...it is just right to be doing this there.

8. If you could record with anyone, who would you choose? Lady B (...eyonce).

9. What have you learned about yourself from being a performer? How to take every guard down in front of a crowd and be genuinely and joyfully myself with no shame or fear.

10. What's the best advice you've ever received? Don't drink beer before a concert. Only vodka. (I gave myself this advice after burping through many a set) not cool....

11. If you could dream about anyone while you sleep, who would it be? My dog...well behaved and happy.

12. Favorite way to spend your day off? Sleep in, brunch, walk, snack, nap, afternoon delight, cocktails, friends, movie, restaurant, margaritas, music, walk, grown up cuddling, whispers, sleep.

13. Favorite way to stay in shape? I'm looking for a new one. No idea right now. Fell off the wagon, but soon to hop back on with a fitness vengeance.

15. If you could have any super power, which one would you choose? The ability to zap myself from here to there in an instant (Especially if there is sending me to my answer to question #11).

Gavin Creel is a two-time Tony Award Nominated Actor. He made his Broadway debut, originating the role of Jimmy Smith, in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, for which he received his first Tony Award® nomination. Gavin received his 2nd Tony Award® nomination starring in the Broadway production of HAIR. Gavin has starred in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES on Broadway, and the London productions of MARY POPPINS, and HAIR.

On television, Gavin played Bill alongside Julie Andrews in Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime.

As a songwriter, Gavin has released two original albums: GoodTimeNation, Quiet (which landed on Billboard’s “Top Heat Seekers”), and his single “Noise," which raised money and awareness for marriage equality. His third album, Get Out will be released on March 20, 2012.

Gavin was a co-founder of Broadway Impact, the first and only grassroots organization to mobilize the nationwide theater community in support of marriage equality.
